I have the same problem on gutsy ppc with my external usb writer
(lacie). The overburn option in gconf-editor didn't help for me.

I have this problem in Fiesty! I can only confirm it for cd's since I
have only a cd burner. This has happened when using Rhythmbox for audio
cd's, and the Nautilus front end (Places > CD/DVD Creator) for data
cd's, and when I right click on an .iso and chose Write to disc... It
even happened, IIRC
matt, your bug might have totally different cause, better to not abuse
that fixed issue and to open a new one so people not concerned by your
issue don't get flooded by mails about your issue and it makes them
easier to read and work on

I would like to re-open this bug. I'm getting these exact issues on an
upto date Dapper (6.06LTS x86) install when trying to burn the Ubuntu
6.06 PPC Desktop iso. I've tried multiple times, always with this
result.
