Thanks for the ping. I've uploaded the updated version which was in the
ppa as a new 1.0.5-1ubuntu3 SRU now. I've reopened and reused bug
#2061687 since the description there was SRU compliant which is not the
case on the current report

To manage
I just built an unaltered Pipewire 1.0.9 (the last one in the 1.0 branch),
'pipewire --version' says 1.0.9. Even ditching our downstream patches, Snapshot
still has what seems to be the same trouble.
I'd suggest filing a report upstream[1] (maybe it is already covered by [2] or
[3]). If you do so,
Followed up with them in said merge request:

I had overlooked that a backport was done upstream at
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/merge_requests/2145.
I picked the patch and installed it (also added to the PPA[1]). But I
still get the same error.

I got the reported issue.
One bit that fixed a race condition was missing from the patch. I pushed
to ppa:nteodosio/wirepipe and tried in 24.04 but it doesn't seem enough
to fix the problem. My error message is different though ("could not
play camera stream") and stderr says
