If hal does not start up for you, please do the following steps and
report the results in a new bug report:
* Upgrade to the latest Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) packages.
* Reboot your machine, to g
With "--daemon=no" in the init script you see "Error binding udev_event
socket: Address already in use", but with the default "--daemon=yes"
(default), start-stop-daemon hangs first a while.

I can confirm this from a LiveCD.
It appears like "invoke-rc.d hald stop" does not halt hald and then
"start" fails ("already/still running").
The following appears to get done:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp$ sudo invoke-rc.d dbus reload && sudo invoke-rc.d hal
restart
* Reloading system message bus
downgrade from 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu8 to 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu7 doesn't work
as well

I tryed to do as Uzzi said:
Remove hal --->sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart ---> install hal
but that did not work. I was able to remove hal and I was able to
restart dbus but then, when I tryed to install hal I got the same
problem as above::

I've installed hal 0.5.11~rc2-1ubuntu!
