This bug has been fixed in librep 0.90.2, other UTF-8 releated issues
have been fixed in Sawfish 1.5.0.
BTW, the current versions are: librep 0.90.5, rep-gtk 0.90.2, Sawfish
1.6.1 and sawfish-pager 0.7.2, so Ubuntu (and Debian) are heavily
outdated.

I have the exact same problem (in French, not in German).
The importance of this bug is marked as low, it is inapporpriate: the
importance should be at least normal, because it makes sawfish-ui almost
unusable in some cases. See the attached screenshot: several options
appear exactly with the same
