Yanked Foresight off the machine (conary, ugh) and did a fresh 8.04
install. The generic kernel does indeed solve my issue. Marking this
resolved.

Hi d_smith,
I see you are running the -386 kernel flavor. Care to try installing
and running the -geneirc flavor for both the kernel and linux-ubuntu-
modules:
sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.24-12-generic
sudo apt-get install linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-12-generic
then reboot to the 2.6.24
