Same here. I tested it again with
http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-beta-server-i386.iso
I did not touch anything, i.e. I did not put "vga=xxx" in boot parameter, just
booted it, when I saw the language to choose, I used ctrl-alt-f[1-6] to switch
