I resolved this issue by following J.A. Watson's how to replace
OpenOffice 2.4 with 3.0, see:

2000498448b,00.htm#comment20098505. I suppose that the warning that
loading apps that are not in sync with Ubuntu applies here. I have not
had any
Ubuntu 8.10 is running Open Office 2.4. Above I saw mention of ver. 3.0.
Synaptic does not list 3.0. So my crashes are coming after updating
8.04 pre-install.

This is on a dell latitude d600 laptop using the free radeon driver, no compiz.
This installation was dist-upgraded from gutsy to hardy alpha 5 when it was
