Even xbacklight doesn't work; however, doing:
$ xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native
fixes backlight control with xbacklight. Doesn't help with Fn+Home/End.

I've got a thinkpad R61i -- same problem. Just installed Hardy beta 2
days ago. It was working fine on the same laptop with Gutsy.

Assigning to HAL. There haven't been any significant updates to GPM WRT
to brightness keys, but there have been to HAL. It is likely a HAL bug.
