I have Kubuntu 8.04 and I think I have the same problem. I cannot print with
cups with none of the printers of my school, I don't receive any error messages
but nothing get printed. I tried to install a printer with kcontrol,

I have observed that adding the SMB printer works if you untick the
'Requires Authentication' box. But, printing still doesn't work. The
print queue doesn't even appear in the taskbar when trying to print.
