I deleted smb.conf and it did the same, so not it. However, I got the
Desktop back by manually installing ubuntu-desktop.

I think its a live bug. While updating my 64 bit, I got a message asking
if I want to use package maintainer samba file. Not knowing better and
since it was the default, I accepted. I cannot now boot into the Desktop
though I can log into an fail safe xterm. Any help would be appreciated.

Marked as invalid since the reporter has said the problem no longer
exists. There is no option for Close and invalid seems the best
option...

I do not know what changed but the Samba updates are working on my
system now. This bug report can be considered solved or fixed now.

The problem seems to affect the 32 bit version of Hardy. I just got some
feedback from someone using the 64 bit version of Hardy that said his
system was not affected by this.
