I tested Ubuntu 8.10 and the problem is still there. Install is
impossible. With 8.04 I reuse the xorg.conf file from my 7.10
installation and it was OK. But now, this workaround doesn't work
anymore.

If it worked on 7.04, it means that there's a regression in the new
driver. Please try a daily livecd or the upcoming alpha6 (later this
week), there's a new stable version of the driver (2.2.1) which could be
better than the one in alpha5.
