Bálint, have you tried IgnorantGuru's fix to /etc/udev/rules.d/70

I can confirm the bug in intrepid 8.10
I followed Bálint Magyar's advice above and fixed the issue. Under Preferences
> Misc i set my DVD device to /dev/cdrom1 and it worked like a charm.
Since I have a CD drive and I DVD drive (both internal) I executed a 'ls
/dev/cdrom*' command. It returned

This bug is still present in Intrepid final and all updates as of the
date of this post. MPlayer tries to use /dev/dvd, however, the correct
device is /dev/cdrom0 in my case. Totem works as intended.
The wiki article mentioned above has nothing to do with this bug.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

I just dist upgraded to "stable" 8.04 and I am having this problem. I
followed the steps above to fix udev 70-...-cd.rules. It didn't make a
difference. I am using mplayer. In its preferences dialog under the misc
tab it says /dev/dvd and the udev file also lists /dev/dvd. For some

Did anyone try adding "-dvd-device" to the mplayer or gmplayer start
command?
I found in Hardy that this command won't work:
gmplayer dvd://1
It results in the error "No stream found to handle url dvd://1"
However, this command works:
gmplayer -dvd-device /dev/scd0 dvd://1

Hi Juan,
Per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following
information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate
attachment.
* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log
For more information regarding the kernel
Not an mplayer bug. Probably a kernel bug if it affects so many apps,
even those that don't use HAL.

Duplicated on an AMD64 desktop (os is i386) using Hardy 8.04 Alpha 5.
This happens in Totem and mplayer as well. Some people reported that
Totem's "Play Disc" option works, but it also gave the same error for me
in this case.
