The issue only happens when logging in to a wayland session.
Also, I stumbled upon this upstream gtk issue:

Currently we install ibus-gtk4 by default (ibus recommends it), which is
my 'fault'. Assumed that it should be consistent with how ibus-gtk
A no-change rebuild of ibus doesn't help.
