Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed
in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Lucid Lynx. It won't be
fixed in previous versions of Ubuntu because the package doesn't fit the
requirements for

This functionality is implemented in upstream Gnumeric trunk. It will be
available with the next major stable release, that will be gnumeric
1.10.0 (release date unknown).

The functionality for opening external files is not (yet?) implemented in
Gnumeric (see TODO warning in gnumeric/src/hlink.c:
gnm_hlink_external_activate).
It would be nice though if Gnumeric provided the user with some feedback about
this missing functionality.
