Actually I am using gxine 0.5.904 (Lucid Lynx) and everything seems to

You are absolutely right. I had a special character in the name of the
directory. As soon as I changed it the subtitle worked again. THNX.

Everything was Ok. before the last update...
After the update gxine can't find the .srt file (subtitles), you can check the
error in "View -> Engine Log ...".
I also discovered that the error happens only if the name of the .srt or .avi
(full directory name included) contains a non AlphaNumeric
I have the same problem on mine. I was not able to solve yet. If you
have something new please note me as well
