Ok, so I think you can remove the mainline kernel and install "linux-
oem-20.04c" kernel which is 5.13 based. Proprietary drivers will work on
OEM kernel.

Hiya - I went for it - uninstalled various modules and installed the
latest mainline kernel - 5.13.5 - and the problem no longer occurs. I
installed from the .deb on https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v5.13.5/amd64/
Cheers

i'm probably happier to compile a kernel from source. I'll try to get

I have a fix in my mind - but to verify the fix, either install a test
kernel I provide or compile a patched kernel by yourself will be
required.
So I guess nothing more we can do here.

I'm sorry - I don't really feel confident to try the mainline kernel. I've
looked at the instructions, which say to remove nvidia, virtualbox etc etc
which i use - and the instructions don't actually map correctly to the layout
of the kernel download files.
For example, the instructions mention
FWIW, I suspect part of the driver is not correct, but please test
mainline kernel first.

I would love to be helpful - but i don't really know how to do that and then
get back to the kernel I'm on. I don't even know if all my stuff (virtualbox,
nvidia, etc) will work with it. Sorry not trying to be dumb, just not done that
before.
is there an easy way to do that?

I don't believe that this is a problem with GnuRadio, as the kernel
stack trace shows a device driver or similar.. plus the computer is
unusable after the problem occurs.
