I have the same problem as Martin, but on my Thinpad T43p.
After reloding the ath_pci module it shows the actuall wifi's.
macat's way, didn't work for me.

If I restart the Networkmanager, it works well.
So,
/etc/dbus-1/event.d/25NetworkManager restart
then
/etc/dbus-1/event.d/26NetworkManagerDispatcher restart

I have a similar problem on my Thinkpad T41p (AR5212). After resuming
from suspend, I have to unload the ath_pci kernel module and reload it
manually, otherwise it only sees the networks available before the
suspend, and cannot connect.
Can you try if reloading ath_pci helps for you, too?
