Not sure if this is related, but I also have X-Server crash when activating a layout. I use Kubuntu Hardy Beta (i386) on a Dell computer. When I go to System-Settings -> Regional & Language -> Keyboard Layout and add a language, and then click Apply. Xorg will crash and bring me back to the login
