This solution worked out for me...
Setting kernel parameter kernel parameter
"psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=1" solved the problem, as suggested in
comment #4 above and here

Btw, I had ended up installing ubuntu studio 20.10 before trying the
solution so I am not sure if it would solve it under 20.04.

and Kubuntu 20.10. Touchpad _almost_ does not work at all, from time to
