This is still a problem with 8.10.
I have 8.04 installed on my desktop. I installed 8.10 within virtualbox.

Have you run the /usr/share/virtualbox/x11config.pl script?
I've confirmed this just now, but only after having used the "Screen and
Graphics Preferences" tool to add a new resolution (1920x1200).
