@Bartosz: this happens both using simple-scan and scanimage executables,
so this seems to be related to Sane backend. If you still think the

Could you please run simple-scan with debuging, by opening terminal and
running:
simple-scan -d
and reproduce issue by scanning one page with changed brighness and contrast
