System was in unstable state after trying to use nvidia version 340 as
suggested in post #2.
Needed to have system in functional state.
Was able to use sudo dpkg-divert --remove to remove the mismatched
packages from nvidia-340 attempt.
Afterwards all nvidia* packages were purged from the system
Please reproduce the hang and black screen once again, then reboot again
with the nouveau.modeset=0 workaround and run:
journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt
and attach the file 'prevboot.txt' here.

nVidia driver 340.107 is available, however switching to that in
Software & Updates has resulted in some issues.
After Apply Changes, I am kicked to the Nouveau driver.
