snapshots of chromium, and as such your browser may be unstable and/or
crashy. Use at your own risk, and don't report bugs against the
chromium-browser package on launchpad.

Unfortunately - I gave up on it eventually and found a PPA with the
native version.

see with the setup you described?

Yes, works fine.
Not sure if it's worth patching the ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND page - to somehow
explain snap permissions and how to adjust them..
