Those repeating errors might be related to the main problem, although
it's never certain.
At this stage I would ask you to report the problem to upstream at:

However it might be more helpful to wait until Ubuntu 20.04 is released

Ok, I now managed to get a journalctl log of this.
Same thing again after switching the user in the morning: the
credentials dialog on black background didn't accept my password and I
had to click around 50 times cancel to get rid of it.
Something like this in the log:
huhti 07 08:55:30 E7440 gn
I don't know what would cause this. Next time it happens please run:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
and then attach the resulting file here.

Hmmm...I'm now thinking that maybe the auth dialog is still asking for
the password of the previous user? Need to test this when this happens
the next time.

Still happened in Ubuntu 19.10.
I switched user and I got the dialog that asked my password to update
repositories. However, it didn't accept my password. By clicking cancel
~20-30 times the dialog finally faded away.

I now captured a video after the PC had been untouched for the night. In
the video I have switched the user and I needed to click Cancel around
