This patch is not applicable any more as hal_lpadmin in Hardy got
restructured in terms of HPLIP support. Especially print queues using
the HPLIP CUPS backends are not disabled any more when the printer is
turned off or disconnected. This should have fixed this bug.

This is a confirmed problem with hal, however it effects only ubuntu
gutsy and some hp laserjet printers.
However this should already be fixed in hardy. I'll be testing on hardy

I applied the patch 2 days ago and it seems to work so far - no half
pages and no printer stopped/disabled yet. Can't be absolutely certain
since the initial problem is an intermittent one. But I'll watch it over
the next week or so and see how it goes.

If you apply this patch the the hal_lpadmin does it fix this behavior?
To apply this patch:
Copy patch file to the correct location:
sudo cp hal_lpadmin-ubuntu7.10-hplip.patch /usr/lib/hal/scripts
/hal_lpadmin-ubuntu7.10-hplip.patch
sudo cd/usr/lib/hal/scripts/
sudo patch -p1 > hal_lpadmin-ubu
Following a recent update to CUPS, it has now reverted to its old only-
semi-broken behaviour of stopping the printer for no apparent reason
(sometimes part-way through a page), but at least marking it as such and
allowing me to start/'enable' it again.
