ran the StartupManager tool - a very nice tool. It can be installed from
Synaptic.

It doesn't work with me either, I installed ubuntu 7.10 on several PC's,
usplash works OK with the livecd, but after install I get a blank screen
at boot, when I commented out the enteries in /etc/usplash.conf I got a
