Just asking if this is the problem I have:
I have Chromium as a favorite in my gnome panel on the left side. After
some time the indication of the running Chromium windows disappears
(like no Chromium is running at all - clicking the shortcut on the left
just opens a new window). When pressing ALT
Not at the moment, I'm working on higher priority bugs and features.
I'm unassigning myself from the bug so that it's free for anyone to pick
up.

And I've confirmed on my end that the fix works too. Installing the
Google Hangouts extension enables the appindicator icon.

It looks like setting TMPDIR to $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR in snapcraft.yaml's
environment section for the app should do the trick (thanks Trevinho for
the hint!).

Thanks Chris for those details.
AppIndicatorIcon::WriteUnityTempImageOnWorkerThread() calls
base::CreateNewTempDirectory(), which calls GetTempDir() (in
https://cs.chromium.org/chromium/src/base/files/file_util_posix.cc),
which honours the TMPDIR environment variable.
So we need a way for chromiu
Is there an env variable we can set to change the location of tmp? I
think in generally it shouldn't be attempting to use /tmp for anything.
