This is an old ticket, but I agree with it. For similar reasons I
created a plugin which compacts the buddy list. It might be useful to
someone, so I'll post the link here:

This may be a stupid question, but I have the same question, but can't
find this Contacts menu you speak of ? All I see across the top is
Buddies / Accounts / Tools / Help, and none of those have a View
submenu. There's also no View option or tab under prefs or plugin
options.

You can make the contact list more compact by unchecking "Contact information"
in the Contacts -> View menu.
