It's a bug, and it's fixed in the current serie/next version of Ubuntu,
there is no proper solution/fix planned for 18.10

So to resolve the issue, the default package (which is deprecated) must be
manually changed?
Should I simply install gnome-shell-extensions to resolve it? I'm not clear on
what you mean, or why the issue is invalid.
As installed from the disc, the issue is present so I'm unsure what I'm
supposed
There has been report about similar issues over the cycles, e.g bug
#1063487. Technically that's deprecated in 3.30 which removed the
desktop view in favor of a new component (gnome-shell-extension-desktop-
icons) which doesn't have that issue because it forces alignment on the
grid

In 18.10 the desktop is from the 'nautilus-desktop' process, which is
part of natilus.
