This seems to no longer be an issue since the meta package "mono" no
longer exists in Hardy. However, I don't know if this would cause an
issue for updates.

For anyone who comes across this through a search, the issue is still
present, but can be avoided by just installing mono-common and mono-jit
packages individually as mono was just a meta package (i.e. does nothing
outside packaging). Maybe this is what Michael meant, but I didn't
understand what h

The last mono merge from Debian removed the mono meta package:
+ Removed mono and mono-devel meta packages, as they are not useful for
anyone.
The other mono package are installable (and you can remove the mono
package if you want).
