... NM will get proper PPP support at some point. this is tracked in

Looks to me as if this is a dup of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/147119.
It also looks like the network manager is declaring defeat prematurely,
based on the log.

manager shows an 'x' and won't let me connect a VPN.
