I am receiving this similar failure near the end of install of eeebubtu
beta 4.

and
grubinstaller failed with code 1 (configuring bootloader)

This ended up being related to having an existing home directory that
was not wiped. It has been fixed for Hardy.

As I said in the first followup post explaining the steps I took to get
to the bug:

So there is as of yet no backend to verify the connection with. This is
meant to be the primary (and only) backend and frontend. It's a
standalone system.
