For different reasons I switched to Manjaro. On that distribution I
installed a package that got the fingerprint scanner working. The
package is: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/libfprint-vfs0097-git
Beware though, it depends on an older version of libfprint.

Same Bug. "Could not access any fingerprint readers. Please contact your
system administrator for help" when trying to enable Fingerprint login
under the user settings in Ubuntu 20.04
Hardware: Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th Gen (2017).

I have the same issue on my Lenovo T570 laptop which has been certified
for Ubuntu as well.

I'd like to request this as well. Ubuntu 18.04. Tested the "prototype"
on my T470 on Ubuntu 16.04 before I upgraded and it worked as well.
Would be outstanding to have fingerprint functionality on this thing.

same for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and Debian 10 testing.
Lenovo P51 use same sensor (Validity with id [138a:0097]), and it is not
recognized by libfprint.

utility named "prototype", that tests the sensor and seems to work
