I had the same problem on Ubuntu LTS 18.04, desktop freeze and had to
either do REISUB or Ctrl+alt+F2 to switch to a terminal and reboot the
machine (restarting gnome service didn't work for me).
Now works to preview also excel files. Related bug on Gnome's site:

converter (apt install unoconv).

Exact same problem here, with ods files (did not try odt).
Before freezing a notification appears : "Additional packages
requested". And UI freeze, ctrl + Alt + F2 or other keyboard shortcuts
are not helpful.
Ubuntu 17.10, happens on Wayland AND Xorg.
