Hi Michael,
I see this hasn't been released (at least in 19.04.4 which I had on my
test install for 19.04); moving to rls-ee-incoming so we keep tracking
this feature work.

This does seem like a significant shortcoming in the current 18.04
install experience. Let's fix it in 19.04 and it will be available for
18.04 existing install media with a straightforward snap refresh.

I was wrong. the 18.04.1 server-live installer (as well as daily ISOs
until today) have not improved upon this (tested on an UEFI booted
system only). The alternative (debian-installer based) server installer
works fine.

You can use the 18.04(.1) alternate server installer if you run into
this situation. Also, I think this situation has improved in the 18.04.1
'server-live' (subiquity) installer.

Seems the "workaround" is to install normal desktop ubuntu instead of
ubuntu server, as that's the only installer that actually works
correctly.

Confirmed; just ran in to this brick wall while trying to install on top
of a bcache. This is a fundamental installer feature that is completely
missing.
