In Ubuntu Intrepid (currently openttd version 0.6.2-1) 'fixes' this.
"The upcoming 0.6.0 version checks for this problem and points you to
the readme file if any characters are missing."
Whether this is satisfactory and we need automatic changing I don't
know.
