I believe the issue has been fixed upstream
It is Ubuntu policy not to introduce new packages into old releases.
Crosswire packaging team is working on updating Sword, Xiph
Just went to the Gnomesword site - upgraded to Gnomesword 2.4.1 - All solved.
It also sets it out much better.
I wonder why the updated version of Gnomesword isn't part of the standard
repositories?

I am using Hardy, and have a similar experience when using GnomeSword (2.2.3).
We have also tested it in Intrepid.
The difference is that not all dictionaries are affected.
