Intrepid, I am unable to recreate the original bug report of not being
able to open xls files. Which particular release of Ubuntu and specific

They are the same underlying problem. The pref crash is known caused by some
problems in the dev series and fixed long ago.
If you can repeatably cause the disabling please supply details on the

Ok some good news, this morning I fixed both of the above problems as
follows (plugin manager active plugins stay and File->Preferences works,
btw unless I was dreaming I am pretty sure I had the same exact problem
in the gnumeric deb package too and it should be fixed the same way).

Thanks. Now I am having some other weird problems though.
I have to activate the plugins in plugin manager _every time_ I start gnumeric.
I tried erasing ~/.gnumericrc but
it didn't help.
Also, if I go to File -> Preferences... I get a crash and a core dump
every time:
[2]+ Segmentation fault
Sorry by my English, maybe is not clear. I am glad you can open the
files now.

I will also see if I can access the plugin manager on the Gutsy machine
(it is unfortunately no longer close by, but I still have access to it).
I'll try to report back in a couple of days so that this can be sorted
out and closed.

Ok I fixed my gnumeric-gtk problem, all my plugins were inactive for
some reason. Activated them in plugin manager and I can open Excel
files. Thanks guys.

macuto, that's quite a screenshot. Thanks for your help I think the
person was confused by your comment because he read it as "JC Nash is
employed by macuto." Just fyi.
I attached my screenshot which shows that I have the same packages
installed on amd64 and that not only can I not open a file a.
If you can post the file that you cant open in gnumeric I can test it to
see where is the problem in the app or in the file, my xls is from

macuto I am not sure what file you'd like me to post. Are you on amd64
if it "works for you" or is that what you meant? Btw I just recompiled
with dpkg-buildpackage and got the same result so I'll see if I can/have
time to trace it down further.

So on my amd64 system unfortunately having gnumeric or gnumeric-gtk I
still can't open or save XLS files. This is quite annoying as I like
gnumeric a lot more than oo spreadsheet for graphs. Thanks.

I have just confirmed that gnumeric+gnumeric-plugins-extra still gives
"unsupported file format" for xls
files on my Gutsy system, while gnumeric-gtk seems to work fine.
