Hi,
Too many changes to be updated in released Ubuntu according to the Ubuntu
policy [1] but it can be probably easily backported as it was already done for
Debian oldstable [2].

I confirm this is a serious issue.
Xenial is LTS version for Ubuntu, so it's going to stay around for a long time.
Meanwhile, zstd v0.5.1 is an experimental version using an incompatible format.
It cannot read from zstd v1+.
It generates data in a format that normal programs without legacy support
