developer).
As recommended I just filed a new Bug report (Bug #565883) including

Thanks a lot for your help!

SlimJim, let us take this to a new bug report. This one was reported by

he is likely not so interested. Please use "ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-

Yes, the same problem still exists in Ubuntu 9.10. I'm using a Radeon
9800 SE. I have exactly the same problems with screen artifacts. I would
be more than happy to assist in further investigations

and there is not the same problem. Only little artifact in games like
urbanterror.

I have the exact same thing happening with my Radeon 9500 Pro. Was fine
in 8.10 (and Windows) but in 9.04 and 9.10 beta it displays the graphic
glitches/artifacts. It also crashes fairly regularly when dragging
Icons. I have tried the xorg-edgers xserver-xorg-ati and the problem is
still there.
Closing due to unavailability of hardware for troubleshooting. If you
do manage to get the hardware set up for testing and want to help with
troubleshooting it, please feel free to re-open.

I'd love to help out on this, but unfortunately the computer with that
ATI card hasn't been functioning for a while due to a bust PSU. I might
temporarily transfer the ATI card to the computer I'm currently using

I don't know if this will fix this specific issue, but I've backported a
bunch of high importance patches that upstream recommended, that fix
problems sort of like this one, so I think it would be worth the time to
test. It includes a fix for "color banding issues" which sounds vaguely

still has the same problem.

Thanks. You can also get an updated ati driver on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XorgOnTheEdge but I don't expect any change.

Ok, Xorg doesn't create a config file itself, so I removed the current
one and restarted X. Same behavior.
(BTW, I have installed all updates from the update-manager in case one
of them would've fixed this, but no change)

This behavior is on the live CD. I haven't installed Gutsy yet, since I
get this behavior. The computer I'm running this on has edgy working
with the fglrx driver. However. I can make a small 5GiB or so partition
to install gutsy on, for the purpose of this bug report.
Since this is the live CD, I
