The PC that had the problem do not exist anymore.
Quite a lot of time passed.

and it happened again today.
dmesg just tells me theres busy inodes on changed media, but i noticed
that a partition i had mounted was also unmounted when this happened.
so perhaps hardy is unmounting things from my /media folder? i can
ermount the drives, but not the dvd drive without rebooting

it happened again! i rebooted, and the drive came back. then listening
to the mp3's through amarok caused the following dmesg | tail:
$ dmesg | tail
[ 2107.478952] VFS: busy inodes on changed media.
[ 2107.479169] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize!
[ 2107.487505] VFS: busy inod
oh yeah - i should mention, just before the drive unmounted, the cpu
usage shot up to night on 100%, though 'top' showed that no specific
program was using anything!

ha! it happened again. i was listening to a dvd of mp3 files, and the
drive just unmounted. im running hardy heron on a packard bell r4360,
and the dvd drive (the third its had) is an NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A.
dmesg | tail just says
[ 8765.839427] VFS: busy inodes on changed media.
[ 8765.841916] VFS
hmmm. since the last batch of updates, i have run a dvd (one which
previously unmounted), and it has played through. maybe the problem is
fixed...

i have the same problem with 8:4, hardy heron. when watching dvd's
(protected and otherwise), about 30-40 minutes into viewing, the dvd it
randomly unmounts both the dvd, and the dvd drive. 'sudo mount -a'
doesnt restore the drive, but powering down for 10 minutes and
rebooting does.
will post 'd
I tried yesterday a fresh install of a 7.10
The problem was that after CD boot during the installation process the drive
was opening causing a lot of problems to the installer like hanghing nowhere
with no install window open and no error message.
On the same machine I added another dvd drive and
done it and posted
