After booting my Acer Revo R3610 with linux-image:amd64 3.5.0.24.30,
"vbetool dpms off" (and other commands) also produces the "Real mode
call failed" error. It worked fine with kernel 3.5.0.21.32. Don't know
about the versions in-between.

includes any suspend/resume handling.

Debian has fixed this, but didn't appear to forward the patch upstream;
I do not know if the fix has made it into Ubuntu. Does this issue still
exist?

Confirming: I can reproduce this error with acpi-support/intrepid 0.110,
and the suggested changes fix the problem. Per http://bugs.debian.org
