I remove ~/.config/nautilus ,did not function.
Then rm -rf /usr/lib/nautilus/ ;sudo apt-get install nautilus --reinstall
now can open nautilus.

I am still having problems.
I tried removing, purging & reinstalling Nautilus; no joy.
Then I found this bug and tried:
* Removing ~/.config/nautilus
This worked. I have desktop icons again and a file manager. However,
Nautilus has just one menu, titled "Files", and it contains no entries.

directory is then re-created immediately nautilus is started.

Same issue here, upgraded from 16.04 to 16.10, the desktop was blank,
and Nautilus wouldn't launch.
Solved by $ sudo rm -rf ~/.config/nautilus $

This happened for me after an update from Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.
I fixed it by:
* Purging nautilus with apt-get
* Removing ~/.config/nautilus
I suspect the last step may fix it alone but I've not been able to
recreate the initial issue to verify.
