This has been fixed in hardy for a little while now.
newt (0.52.2-11.1ubuntu1) hardy; urgency=low
* Merge from debian unstable, remaining changes:
- Remove explicit python version numbers from the build.
- python-newt-dbg: Build the extension for the python debug interpreter.
