Having the same issue after upgrading to 1:2.2.1-1ubuntu4.1.
dpkg --purged everything, removed anything with "purple" or "pidgin" I could
find in both my home directory and in the libs.
pidgin will run as root, but not my user.
-d is not helpful in figuring out why pidgin quits.
