I had the same issue w/ the nvidia proprietary driver. Nouveau can
change the screen brightness but will flicker while changing brightness
until you also use the "acpi_backlight=vendor" parameter (or
"acpi_backlight=none"
Before the changes setting brightness before logging in works smooth,
after
