Well, up to now, no one here have said that "Setting the /etc/init.d/rc
back to "concurrency=none" fixed the issue."

Also, after clicking the icon to shutdown/restart/.., my system
halts for a while before the options appear.
I do not know if this is HAL related but also occurred immediately after
upgrading to Ubantu 7.10.
I had to manually reconfigue my network connectivity to connect with the
