I am closing this bug since it was more a bios problem than an Ubuntu
one but the sound card selection is another issue which is a duplicate
of Bug #87909.

I checked my BIOS setting again. I'm sure I, like you, changed the
setting to disable the on-mother-board audio chip when I installed my
PCI audio board. But as you discovered, somehow it was reset to
"enabled". I disabled it again. Ubuntu now reports only the PCI
chip, not the on
Thank you for the reply. It sounds like we are experiencing the same
thing. But I think I solved the problem. I went into BIOS at startup
tonight, and found that my onboard sound was set to Auto instead of
Disabled. I disabled it years ago when I got the Audigy 2 sound card, so
I assumed it was
I have similar problem of erratic sound. After some bootloads the
system correctly plays sound at login and in applications (Firefox with
Flash plugin playing a streaming video from web site); other times sound
does not play. Seems to be random. Onboard sound is SiS SI7012. It
is disabled in t
