It turns out that the update-manager had replaced one invalid
sources.list with a different invalid sources.list, and further trimming
got the show onto the road. Should that be separately reported?

The problem has, in fact, worsened. Now, running the update manager
gives me the following even before I ask it to do anything.

While I did have a sources.list with some nonexistent things in it, the
update-manager removed them a long time ago. Here is the current
