I hit the bug too, on Ubuntu 17.04, with pychess 0.12.2
The newest version 0.12.4 works (https://github.com/pychess/pychess/releases).
Probably fixed within 0.12.3, see
https://github.com/pychess/pychess/issues/1314.
Any chance to upgrade to upstream version ?

This bug also affected me. I installed Pychess 12.4 deb from the Pychess
download page - problem solved.
